In May of 2020, David Hoahwah Haralson launched the website for his Non-Profit company “Free Music Colorado.” I had the pleasure of working with David to design a logo that fit the FMC mission.
Our vision is to bring instruments and music lessons to all young people in the Northern Colorado region, regardless of income or background, so that they may have the opportunity to thrive as artists and citizens.freemusiccolorado.org
FMC Logo Study
Symbolisim of the Yellow Mandala Center
The Free Music Colorado logo was designed to embody ownership, freedom, connection, and music. The symbol was inspired by the Colorado Flag and communicates various truths about the state that unifies us.
The colors in Colorado’s flag represent the environmental features of the state. White symbolizes the snow on her mountains, gold acknowledges the abundant Colorado sunshine, red represents Colorado’s red soil, and blue is a symbol of her clear blue skies. Colorado has flown many flags – three countries and eight Territories have laid claim to (and flown their flags over) what is now the state of Colorado.statesymbolsusa.org
- The wings represent freedom of creativity, which embodies the students can leave the weight of the world behind and soar with the flow of their music. These are blue to represent the clear skies of Colorado.
- The center is based on a mandala and creates a stained glass effect. The circle means we are all inter-connected and emphasizes the power of coming together as one. This is gold and yellow and symbolizes the Colorado sunshine.
- The C for Colorado is red like the rocks it was named after. The C is the core of Free Music Colorado, it is illustrated as a music staff with a tune that was written by the owner David Hoahwah Haralson.
